The short answer

Whelen's full-size light bars today are the Freedom V, Freedom IV, Legacy, Liberty II, Justice, Edge 9X, Century Elite, and Cenator. The Edge 9000 and the original Liberty are no longer in the lineup. The Legacy is the lowest at 1.6 inches tall. The Freedom IV and Freedom V are the tallest at 3.71 inches, and both come in NFPA-oriented versions for fire apparatus.

History

Whelen's light bar family tree

Whelen started with airplanes. In 1952, George W. Whelen III, a pilot and engineer, built a rotating anti-collision beacon for the tail of his plane. A year later he adapted it for police, fire, and ambulance vehicles. Every roof bar Whelen has built since traces back to that beacon. These are the dates Whelen itself publishes on its official company timeline:

  1. 1956Rota-BeamA rotating, magnet-mounted beacon for police, public works, and fire departments.
  2. 1963Strobe arrivesWhelen becomes the first company in the automotive industry to use strobe technology.
  3. 19756000 SeriesWhelen's first fully enclosed light bar.
  4. 19788000 SeriesAn enclosed strobe light bar built on the 6000's success.
  5. 1983Edge 9000The low-profile bar Whelen calls the first fully enclosed light bar with an aluminum I‑beam construction.
  6. 2000LibertyThe first all-LED light bar.
  7. 2013Solid-state Rota-BeamThe classic "rotating" look, done with LEDs and no moving parts.
  8. 2019CenCom Core and WeCanXWhelen's current control platform and the network cable system that ties the bar, siren, and other lights together.
  9. 2026Freedom VUnveiled at FDIC International on April 29, 2026, with new FocusBeam optics.

In between came the Liberty II, Legacy, Justice, Freedom IV, and the Edge 9X, a modern bar that brings the Edge 9000's look back. Whelen still builds its products in the United States, at its headquarters in Chester, Connecticut and a second plant in Charlestown, New Hampshire. Whelen describes itself as "manufactured in America for over 70 years."

Older bars

The Edge 9000 and the original Liberty: where they fit now

Plenty of people searching for Whelen light bars aren't shopping for a new one. They have an Edge 9000 on a plow truck or a first-generation Liberty on a retired cruiser, and they want to know what it is, whether it's worth fixing, and what replaced it. Neither bar appears in Whelen's current full-size lineup, but each has a clear modern counterpart.

1983 · Strobe era

Whelen Edge 9000

Launched in 1983 as a low-profile, fully enclosed bar on an aluminum I‑beam. In a 2024 market advisory, Whelen said the Edge 9000's low profile and durable construction "made it one of the most popular lightbars of its time." It came from the strobe and halogen era, so an original unit won't match the output or power efficiency of a modern LED bar.

Today's counterpart: the Edge 9X. Whelen describes it as a "retro design with modern technology," and it adds WeCanX connectivity and individually controlled LED lightheads.

2000 · First all-LED

Whelen Liberty (original)

Released in 2000 as the first all-LED light bar, the Liberty started Whelen's shift from strobe and halogen bars to LED. Many are still in service or sold used, which is why "used Whelen Liberty light bar for sale" is a common search.

Today's counterpart: the Liberty II, a redesigned Liberty with an aluminum top, a one-piece uni-dome, and SOLO, DUO, or TRIO lightheads. See the Liberty II.

Repair it or replace it?

Whelen's warranty page lists out-of-warranty repairs at a flat $211 per unit for non-strobe products. Units more than 10 years old are priced after inspection, with a $316 minimum. Before you pay that on a decades-old bar, weigh it against what a new bar gives you:

  • Current SAE Class 1 certification. The Legacy, Justice, and Edge 9X also carry California Title 13.
  • A 10-year lighthead warranty on the Legacy, Liberty II, and Freedom IV for units dated January 2023 or later.
  • WeCanX wiring that plugs into a CenCom Core controller, plus night dimming and vehicle-to-vehicle flash sync.
  • LED power draw instead of strobe or halogen loads on your electrical system.

If you're buying a used bar, ask what controller it needs before you pay. An older bar without a matching controller can cost more to get working than it saved.

At a glance

Height is the fastest way to tell the lineup apart. A lower bar looks cleaner and fits under more garage doors and drive-throughs. A taller bar leaves room for bigger optics and heavier-duty frames. Here are the six main full-size bars, drawn to scale using Whelen's published heights without mounting feet.

The Legacy is the lowest bar Whelen makes, and it still gives 360 degrees of light. It has an aluminum top that stands up to hail and a one-piece uni-dome with a single sealing point. TRIO lightheads fit three colors into one module, so fewer modules cover more jobs.

Best for: patrol vehicles where a low roofline matters, and departments standardizing on CenCom Core.

The Liberty II builds on the original Liberty. It has the most control options of any bar here, so it's usually the easiest to match to whatever controller a vehicle already has. It runs on 12 or 24 volts, which matters on heavy trucks. Whelen's Advanced Thermal Design protects LED performance during long scenes.

Best for: mixed fleets, 24-volt vehicles, and anyone replacing an original Liberty.

The Justice uses four corner Linear-LED modules for full 360-degree coverage, a black polycarbonate base, and an extruded aluminum platform. Liquid-injection-molded seals on the center dividers keep water out. It comes in an NFPA version for fire and EMS and in a 62-inch Towman version for wreckers.

Best for: tow and recovery, public works, and fleets that don't need TRIO color.

The Freedom IV is the biggest bar in the lineup, with lengths up to 72 inches for full-size apparatus. Whelen's patented Collimator optics push out more light, and the corner modules blend together for continuous 360-degree coverage. The NFPA Edge Freedom IV is built to meet the zone "A" upper warning requirements for fire apparatus.

  • 5-yr lighthead / 10-yr I/O board

If you loved the Edge 9000, this is Whelen's modern version. It keeps the classic Edge shape and adds WeCanX, Dynamic Variable Intensity, and individually controlled lightheads. It has more length options than any other current full-size Whelen bar, so it also fits compact trucks and wide apparatus.

Best for: Edge 9000 owners upgrading, and odd roof widths.

Choose

Which Whelen light bar fits your job?

Your role narrows the choice faster than any spec sheet, and so do the light colors your state allows you to run. Start here, then check the state warning light laws for your role before you order.

Police patrol

A low roofline and a controller that runs the whole vehicle usually matter most. The Legacy is Whelen's lowest bar and carries CA Title 13. The Liberty II is the easier match if your fleet still runs Standard or Low Current controllers.

Start withLegacy or Liberty II. For unmarked units, skip the roof and use an interior bar such as the Inner Edge XLP.

Fire & EMS

Apparatus has to meet NFPA upper-zone warning requirements, and a longer bar covers a wider cab. Keep in mind that NFPA compliance covers the whole vehicle's warning system. The roof bar is only one part of it.

Start withNFPA Edge Freedom IV. Ask us about the Freedom V for new builds.

Tow & recovery

Wreckers need amber warning plus work light at the back of the truck. The Towman's Liberty II and Towman's Freedom IV add rear Super-LED work lights and LED brake, tail, and turn lights built into the bar.

Start withJustice Towman 62", or step up to the Towman's Liberty II. Browse all tow truck light bars.

Volunteer responders

On a personal vehicle you often want a bar that goes on for a call and comes off after. Magnetic-mount mini bars plug into the power outlet and have on/off and pattern switches on the plug. Color rules for volunteers vary a lot from state to state.

Start withMini Justice or Mini Liberty II, after you read who can legally run which colors.

Construction, utility & municipal

For amber-only warning on a work truck, you need a compact bar that's easy to mount and easy to service more than you need a top-tier controller.

Start withMini Century or Responder LP. For full-size amber, see the Justice.

Compact

Whelen mini light bars

Most full-size Whelen bars also come in a mini version for smaller roofs, temporary mounting, or tight budgets. These are the ones we stock. Browse every size in our mini light bar collection.

Controls

WeCanX and CenCom Core, in plain English

CenCom Core is the central controller for a vehicle's lights and siren. WeCanX is the network that connects the light bar, siren, and other lights to it. Instead of running a separate wire for every function, a WeCanX bar talks to the controller over one data link. That lets you program each lighthead individually.

Whelen introduced both in 2019. At launch, the WeCanX versions of the Legacy, Liberty II, Freedom IV, and Cenator all worked with CenCom Core. WeCanX also runs two features Whelen promotes heavily:

  • Dynamic Variable Intensity: the lights ramp their intensity up and down smoothly instead of just switching on and off.
  • Vehicle-to-Vehicle Sync: nearby Whelen-equipped vehicles flash in sync at a scene.

If you're buying one bar for one vehicle, Standard or Low Current wiring on a Liberty II or Justice is simpler. If you're building out a fleet, go with WeCanX. Shop controllers and add-ons in the Whelen Core collection, and pair the bar with a siren from our Whelen sirens lineup.

Before you buy

Five checks before you order a Whelen light bar

  1. Measure your roof.Pick a length that fits the roof width between the mounting points. Whelen lists every length on each bar's spec page, and vehicle-specific mounting kits are sold separately.
  2. Know your controller.Check what's already in the vehicle. A CenCom Core needs a WeCanX bar. An older WeCan system or a standalone switch box needs the matching WeCan, Standard, or Low Current version.
  3. Choose your colors by law, not by look.Red, blue, amber, white, and green are each restricted differently by state and by role. Our state law guide breaks it down.
  4. Plan your power.Add up your electrical load before install. Our battery drain calculator and wire size guide help you avoid voltage drop and dead batteries.
  5. Decide on add-ons now.Takedown lights, alley lights, and extra colors are easier to spec up front. Several of the Whelen bars we list don't include takedowns or alley lights by default, so call us if you need a custom setup.
FAQ

Whelen light bar FAQ

Is the Whelen Edge 9000 discontinued?

The Edge 9000 is no longer part of Whelen's current full-size lineup. Its modern counterpart is the Edge 9X, which Whelen describes as a retro design with modern technology. The 9X comes in a 1.88-inch short and a 2.73-inch tall version and in nine lengths from 25 to 70 inches.

What replaced the original Whelen Liberty light bar?

The Liberty II. It keeps the Liberty name and adds an aluminum top, a one-piece uni-dome, SOLO, DUO, or TRIO lightheads, WeCanX compatibility, and 12 or 24-volt operation. The original Liberty, released in 2000, was the first all-LED light bar.

What's the difference between the Whelen Legacy and the Liberty II?

The Legacy is lower (1.6 inches vs. 2.5 inches) and carries California Title 13 certification, but it comes only in WeCan and WeCanX versions. The Liberty II adds Standard Current and Low Current versions and runs on 12 or 24 volts, so it's easier to match to an existing controller. Both offer TRIO lightheads and a 10-year lighthead warranty.

Which Whelen light bar has the lowest profile?

The Whelen Legacy, at 1.6 inches tall without mounting feet. The short Edge 9X is next at 1.88 inches.

What is the newest Whelen light bar?

The Freedom V, unveiled on April 29, 2026. It uses Whelen's FocusBeam optics, works only with WeCanX, and comes in eight lengths from 23 to 92 inches. The Freedom IV is still in Whelen's lineup.

Are Whelen light bars made in the USA?

Yes. Whelen builds its products at its headquarters in Chester, Connecticut and its plant in Charlestown, New Hampshire, and says it has manufactured in America for over 70 years.

What warranty comes with a Whelen light bar?

For products dated January 2023 or later, Whelen covers Legacy, Liberty II, and Freedom IV lightheads for 10 years. Other LED lightheads, including the Justice, get 5 years. Whelen's warranty page has the full terms, including coverage for I/O boards.

Where can I buy Whelen light bars?
