Emergency Lights for Trucks: How to Build a Complete Setup

The brightest light isn't the goal. Being seen from every direction is. Here's how to cover all four zones of your truck, what a Starter, Standard and Full build includes, and what it costs with real UBL parts.

The short answer

Light your truck by zone: grille or dash lights for the front, running-board or hide-away lights for the sides, a tailgate bar for the rear, and a roof or mini light bar up top. With UBL parts, a Starter setup runs about $224.96, a Standard build with a roof bar and rear coverage about $794.94, and a Full build with side lighting and a siren about $1,509.90.

Step 1

Think in four zones, not one bright light

A single light bar on the roof can shine right over a low sedan, and a grille light does nothing for the driver coming up behind you. Plan coverage by zone instead: each zone has a job and a tool built for it. Tap a zone to see what covers it.

Four zones, one setup

Click a zone to see what covers it. Front and rear protect you on the road; sides cover intersections; up top buys you distance.

Front: Traffic you're heading toward, and drivers looking in their mirror.

Sides: Intersections and cross traffic, where drivers approach from the side.

Rear: Drivers coming up behind you while you're stopped.

Up top: Distance. A roof-level light is the first thing other drivers see.

Step 2

Build your setup: Starter, Standard or Full

Most emergency light kits for trucks fall into one of three tiers. Pick one to see what lights up, the exact UBL parts, and the total. For Standard and Full, you can switch between a mini roof bar and a full-size light bar.

A head start

Will Z-Flash fit my truck?

Z-Flash modules flash the lights your truck already has: headlights, turn signals, reverse lights and more, depending on the model. They plug in instead of cutting into the wiring, which makes them a fast way to add warning to a Starter build. Each module lists the exact trucks and years it supports. Pick yours:

The zone plan is the same on every truck. What changes is tailgate bar size, which Z-Flash module fits, and how much roof you have to work with.

Ford F-150

Ford F-250 / F-350

  • Rear: 60" tailgate bar (F-Series).
  • Z-Flash: OBD module for 2011–2016, BCM Plugin for 2017–2022, BCM 2300 for 2023–2026.
  • On a long cab, a full-size roof bar or the Acari no-drill platform gives you a clean roof-level light.

Chevy Silverado / GMC Sierra

Ram 1500 / 2500

  • Rear: 60" tailgate bar for full-size Ram trucks.
  • Z-Flash: the Dodge/Jeep/Ram OBD module lists Ram 1500 and 2500 trucks from 2007 to 2024 (pick your year on the listing).
  • Pair it with grille lights and a mini bar for a fast Standard build.

Chevy Tahoe / Suburban

  • No tailgate bar on an SUV. Cover the rear with hide-aways in the factory tail lights.
  • Z-Flash: OBD module for 2007–2016, BCM Plugin for 2017–2020, LCM 2500 for 2021–2026.
  • Interior visor and dash lights keep the roofline clean on command vehicles.

Mid-size: Colorado, Canyon, Ranger, Tacoma

  • Rear: the 49" tailgate bar is the size UBL lists for the Colorado, Tacoma and Ranger.
  • Z-Flash: BCM Plugin for the 2019–2026 Ranger; Colorado and Canyon modules span 2015–2026 (see the finder).
  • A mini light bar is usually the right roof-level light for a smaller cab.

FAQ

Emergency lights for trucks: FAQ

What emergency lights do I need on my truck?

Plan by zone, not by brightness. Cover the front with grille or dash lights, the sides with running-board or hide-away lights, the rear with a tailgate bar, and up top with a roof or mini light bar. That combination keeps you visible to drivers approaching from any direction.

How much does an emergency light setup for a truck cost?

Using UBL parts at October 2026 prices, our example Starter build (dash light, two grille lights and a switch box) comes to about $224.96. A Standard build that adds a mini roof bar and a 60-inch tailgate bar is about $794.94. A Full build with running-board lights and a siren kit is about $1,509.90. Wiring, fuses, mounts and installation are extra and vary by truck.

What's in an emergency light kit for trucks?

A complete kit usually pairs forward lights (grille or dash), a roof or mini light bar, rear coverage such as a tailgate bar, and a switch box or controller to run it all. Fuller kits add side lighting and, for authorized vehicles, a siren and speaker.

Can I add emergency lights to my truck without drilling?

Yes, for parts of a setup. The UBL U-Lite Visor Bar Mini ships with a cig plug and universal brackets. The Whelen Mini Century comes in a magnetic-mount version. The Acari low-profile platform lets you mount rooftop gear without drilling. A Z-Flash plug-in can flash your factory lights on supported trucks without cutting into the wiring.

What size tailgate light bar fits my truck?

UBL's listing recommends the 49-inch tailgate bar for mid-size trucks like the Colorado, Tacoma and Ranger, and the 60-inch bar for full-size trucks like the Silverado, Sierra, Ram and F-Series.

What emergency light colors can I put on my truck?

It depends on your state and your role. Volunteer firefighters, EMS, tow operators, construction crews and private vehicles are each treated differently, and the rules vary by state. Check your state's rules before you order.

Does Z-Flash work on my F-150, Silverado or Ram?

On many model years, yes. For example, the Z-Flash BCM Plugin for Ford lists the 2016–2023 F-150, the Z-Flash LCM 2500 lists the 2022–2026 Silverado 1500, and the Dodge/Jeep/Ram OBD module lists the Ram 1500 from 2007 to 2024. Use the finder above, then pick your exact truck on the product page.

Do I need a siren on my truck?

Only if your role and state allow it. Sirens are generally restricted to authorized emergency vehicles. Many tow, construction, utility and volunteer setups are lights-only.
