Start with the ground. It causes more trailer lighting faults than everything else combined, and it produces the weirdest symptoms: lights that dim, flicker, come on in the wrong combination, or quit every time you hit a bump.
Check the white ground wire's connection to bare metal on the frame first, then work outward: connector, fuse, lamps, harness. Diagnosing in that order finds most faults fast, without pulling a single wire.

This assumes typical light-duty wiring, where stop and turn share a circuit per side. Identify circuits by function, not color, since RV-standard and commercial trailers are wired differently.

Step 1: Check the ground
Every circuit returns through one white wire. Compromise it and current finds whatever path it can, which is why bad grounds look like anything but a ground problem.
It needs clean bare metal on the frame. Paint, powder coat, rust, and primer all insulate, and a bolt through painted steel passes just enough current to look connected until it's under load. Lamps grounded through their mounting studs need their own clean contact too: a taillight on a rusty bracket has no ground at all.
To confirm: with the lights on, run an adequately sized jumper from the trailer's ground point straight to the truck's frame or battery negative. If the lights improve, there's resistance somewhere in the path you just bypassed. Trace it with voltage-drop readings under load rather than assuming it's the frame bolt, then repair the connection you actually find.
Step 2: Inspect the connector
The plug lives at road height, takes salt and spray, and on boat trailers gets submerged.
Isolate power before you touch the contacts. Unplugging doesn't necessarily make either half dead: the truck's auxiliary terminal can stay live, and a trailer battery can energize the trailer plug.
Then look at the pins. Green or white powder means corrosion, corrosion means resistance, and resistance means dim or dead lights. Clean them with contact cleaner and a small brush, and check pin tension while you're there.
Pack the connector with dielectric grease before reassembling. It's the cheapest thing you can do to keep the fault from coming back.

Step 3: Check the tow vehicle's fuse
If an entire circuit is out and the trailer's ground is good, suspect the truck. Most vehicles fuse the trailer circuits separately from their own lighting, which is why your taillights can work perfectly while the trailer's don't. Check your owner's manual for the location and rating, and replace like with like.
If the correct fuse blows again, stop. That's an overcurrent fault, and it could be in the trailer, the adapter, the socket, or a converter module. Isolate each until you find it. Never fit a bigger fuse. That turns a lighting problem into a fire.
Fastest way to split truck from trailer: plug in a different trailer, or plug yours into a different vehicle. Whichever one carries the fault is the one to fix. Rule out a short first, since hanging a shorted trailer on someone else's truck can damage their module.

Step 4: Test the lamps
Incandescent bulbs burn out. Check the filament and the socket for corrosion.
LED lamps rarely fail from a dead element, but sealed units flood through a cracked lens or failed gasket, and a flooded LED is a replaced LED. That's why the IP rating matters more than it looks on a spec sheet. Any replacement should be DOT/FMVSS 108 compliant for its position, which the stamped code on the lens tells you.
Check that each lamp has its own ground path. A lamp grounded through its mount is only as good as the metal it's bolted to.
Replacing more than one? Do the set. Sealed LED trailer lights draw a fraction of the current and shrug off the vibration that kills filaments.
Step 5: Follow the harness
Failures cluster in four places:

Chafe points where the harness crosses a frame member

Pinch points at the tongue, coupler, or anywhere a ramp or gate catches it

Water traps where wire sits in standing water or goes under at the ramp; water wicks inside the insulation and corrodes copper you can't see

Old splices, especially unsealed twist-and-tape or crimped butt connectors
A wire that tests fine at rest but fails under load is almost always corroded internally. Replace the run instead of adding another splice.
On boat trailers, though, the lamps are usually the recurring problem rather than the wire. Only fully sealed submersible units survive repeated dunking.

How to test without a tow vehicle
You can bring up every lighting circuit with a 12V battery and two leads. Three rules first, and they aren't optional:

Fuse the positive lead. A car battery can push hundreds of amps into a short, enough to melt a lead or start a fire. Inline fuse, close to the battery, sized for the lamp load.

Isolate everything else. Unhitch and disconnect any trailer battery, solar feed, or converter. A trailer you assume is dead can have a live terminal.

Chock the wheels. Don't trust the trailer's brakes during an electrical test.
From there, clip the negative lead to the connector's ground pin (white) and leave it there. Touch the fused positive to one lighting terminal at a time: running, left stop/turn, right stop/turn, plus reverse if the trailer has backup lamps. Expect steady light, not flashing.
Skip the ground, the 12V auxiliary terminal, and the brake-controller terminal. Those aren't lamp circuits, and energizing them can connect your battery straight to a trailer battery or brake actuator. A standard 6-way round has no reverse circuit at all.
Wear eye protection, and make and break the circuit at the connector rather than at the battery post.
Light-duty connectors only. Commercial SAE J560 trailers share the stop-lamp and ABS circuit and need the manufacturer's own procedure.
One warning on testers: a passive plug-in tester checks the truck's socket, not an unpowered trailer. Only a powered trailer tester replaces the method above
LED hyper-flash isn't usually a fault
Swapped to LEDs and your signals blink twice as fast? Most vehicles spot a burned-out bulb by watching current draw, and LEDs draw far less, so the system reads it as a failure.
Don't assume that's all it is. A real open circuit, a bad ground, or a lamp installed backwards will hyper-flash too, so verify every lamp and ground first.
If it is just load, the fix depends on what's doing the detecting. A replaceable flasher relay is the clean solution; most modern trucks use an integrated module instead, where the answer is a manufacturer-supported setting rather than a parts-store relay.
Load resistors are the fallback. Use the manufacturer's specified rating, confirm it's rated for continuous duty since it stays energized the whole time you hold the brake, and mount it to a metal heat sink away from wiring and plastics. They get hot.
Common questions
Why are my trailer lights not working at all?
A failed ground, a plug that isn't fully seated, or lost trailer power at the vehicle. Check the ground under load, confirm the plug seats with clean pins, then test the truck's socket.
Why are they dim or flickering?
Almost always a weak ground or corroded connector. Both add resistance and drop voltage. Clean to bright metal, clean the pins, grease the plug.
What fuse controls the trailer lights?
Most trucks fuse trailer circuits separately from their own lighting; your owner's manual has the location and rating. If a correct fuse blows again, you have an overcurrent fault. Find it, don't upsize it.
Do LED trailer lights need a resistor?
Usually not. It's one possible fix for a load-detection problem, not a requirement. Check every lamp and ground first.
Replace it once and stop chasing it
