Missouri Emergency Vehicle Color Laws

Missouri enforces specific statutes governing the use of emergency vehicle lighting to ensure public safety and prevent unauthorized use. This guide provides an overview of the legal requirements for emergency vehicle light colors in Missouri, along with information on other permissible vehicle lighting.

Emergency Vehicle Light Colors in Missouri

1. Law Enforcement Vehicles

Under Missouri Revised Statutes Section 304.022, law enforcement vehicles—including those operated by police departments, sheriffs, state highway patrol, and other authorized agencies—must be equipped with:

  • At least one red light visible from 500 feet to the front.
  • A flashing blue light, as authorized by Section 307.175.

These lights are to be used in conjunction with an audible siren during emergency responses.

2. Fire Department and Ambulance Vehicles

According to Section 307.175, vehicles operated by organized fire departments, ambulance associations, or rescue squads—whether paid or volunteer—may use:

  • Fixed, flashing, or rotating blue lights.

These lights must be used only during bona fide emergencies and in conjunction with a siren.

3. Tow Trucks

Tow trucks owned and operated by public utilities or public service corporations may use red and blue lights when providing emergency services, as specified in Section 304.022. These lights must be used in conjunction with a siren and only during emergency responses.

4. Construction and Utility Vehicles

Vehicles and equipment operated by the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), contractors, or utility workers may use:

  • Fixed, flashing, or rotating amber or amber and white lights.

These lights are permitted only when the vehicles are stationary, located in a designated work zone, and workers are present, as outlined in Section 307.175.

Other Vehicle Lighting Regulations

1. Underglow Lighting

Missouri law does not explicitly prohibit underglow lighting; however, restrictions apply:

  • Red and blue lights are reserved for emergency vehicles and should not be visible from the front of civilian vehicles.
  • Flashing lights of any color are generally prohibited on civilian vehicles.
  • Amber and white underglow lights may be permissible if they do not flash and are not distracting.

It's advisable to consult local ordinances before installing underglow lighting.

2. Additional Lighting

Per Section 307.080, civilian vehicles may not be equipped with more than three auxiliary lamps mounted between 12 to 42 inches above the ground. These lamps must not display red or blue colors to the front.

Penalties for Unauthorized Use

Unauthorized use of emergency lighting or sirens is considered a misdemeanor offense in Missouri. Violators may face fines, vehicle impoundment, or other legal consequences.
